🌿 Morphology: Acaulescent or short-stemmed agave that can form a visible trunk with age. It produces a large rosette of fleshy, wide, lanceolate, and arching leaves, ranging from glaucous green to yellowish green, without terminal spines or marginal teeth. The leaves can exceed 60 cm. The roots are fleshy and relatively shallow, adapted to quickly absorb available water.
🌍 Origin and habitat: Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. It is native to Mexico, mainly Jalisco, Michoacán, and the State of Mexico, where it grows in subtropical environments and mountainous areas. It has also been introduced in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Madeira, Sicily, and other warm regions.
🌡️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 9b–11b. It is one of the least cold-hardy agaves. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially if the substrate is moist. It can withstand occasional drops close to 0 °C if completely dry, but does not tolerate frost or prolonged wet cold well.
☀️ Light: During active growth, we recommend an approximate DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ PAR. It tolerates a lot of light, but in very hot climates, it may appreciate protection from the most intense solar radiation during midday. Good lighting keeps rosettes compact and prevents excessively long leaves.
💧 Watering and dormancy: This is an opportunistic species, without as defined a dormant period as agaves from desert regions. It grows whenever mild temperatures, light, and water are available. During growth, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, with low temperatures and reduced activity, significantly reduce watering and keep it dry for prolonged periods.
🌸 Flowering: It is monocarpic: once mature, it produces a spectacular inflorescence that can exceed 2–3 m in height, after which the main rosette dies. The flowers are yellowish-green and usually appear during spring or summer. The plant typically produces numerous offsets before or during flowering, which allow the clone to be preserved.
🧪 Nutrition: During periods of active growth, fertilize with Desert CHOICE Suculentas at a moderate and regular dose. Reduce fertilization when temperatures drop or the plant's activity decreases. In winter, with cold and dry substrate, suspend fertilization.
