🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent of the Aizoaceae family, forming compact clumps of numerous short branches. Each branch features pairs of fleshy leaves positioned very close to one another, ovoid in shape, with a hemispherical base and a triangular, flattened upper part. The leaves, approximately 4–6 cm in length, are greyish-green to reddish-purple, without windows or spotting, and are characterized by keels and angles provided with small, fine teeth. This divergent arrangement of the leaf pairs is the trait that gives the species its name.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is endemic to South Africa and is distributed in the Northern Cape province, in the arid Bushmanland region. It grows in desert and dry scrub environments, within an area where winter and summer rains may alternate. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 8–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −12 ºC in completely dry soil. This resistance comes from specialized cultivation references and should always be interpreted in combination with excellent drainage and the absence of water during frost.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high lighting, with a target DLI PAR greater than 20 mol/m²/day during the active period. High light intensity promotes the reddish or purple coloration of the leaves and keeps the plant compact. During the summer, when it remains dormant, it is advisable to protect it from excessively high temperatures combined with intense radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Growth is concentrated mainly from autumn to spring. During the summer, it remains protected by the sheaths of old leaves and should be kept practically dry. In autumn and spring, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small yellow to yellow-orange flowers, with up to three appearing per branch. Flowering is concentrated during the active growth period, especially in spring in the Southern Hemisphere; in Madrid, this corresponds approximately to March–May.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant cultivated in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
