🌱 Morphology
Fresh green, globose to somewhat flattened or short-cylindrical cactus body, which can reach about 6–7 cm in diameter and form clusters with age. It develops a long taproot. It features about 20 ribs arranged in a spiral and deeply divided into tubercles with a characteristic basal extension resembling a chin, the origin of the epithet mentosa. The areoles are elongated and whitish. It produces numerous radial spines arranged in a comb-like shape, along with several central ones; their coloration can range from yellowish-white to reddish, dark brown, or nearly black. It is a highly variable species, with numerous forms historically described within its complex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Bolivia, mainly in the province of Narciso Campero, in the department of Cochabamba, in the surroundings of Aiquile and towards Mizque. It grows among rocks and on dry mountain slopes, at an altitude of approximately 2,300 to 2,800 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae. Sulcorebutia mentosa and Rebutia mentosa are historical combinations.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must remain completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the cold months, it is kept dry. In spring, abundant and spaced watering resumes, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Its long taproot requires a very draining and airy substrate.
🌸 Flowering
In spring, it produces spectacular flowers, generally purple or intense magenta, up to about 3–3.5 cm in diameter, which appear grouped around the lower part of the stem. White-flowered forms also exist.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
