Senecio crassissimus Humbert
🌱 Morphology
Succulent subshrub with an upright, branched growth habit, reaching about 40–60 cm in height. Its fleshy stems, in shades of grayish-green and purple, support thick, rigid, flattened leaves that are bluish-green or silvery gray, with highly decorative purple margins. The leaves are arranged edge-on to the stem, like small propellers, a configuration that reduces the surface area directly exposed to the sun and helps limit water loss. The purple coloration intensifies with abundant light.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
Family Asteraceae, subfamily Asteroideae, tribe Senecioneae. It is native to central Madagascar, where it grows in warm, seasonally dry environments. Its adaptation to water scarcity is based on its fleshy leaves and its ability to withstand periods of drought. Although traditionally marketed as Senecio crassissimus, the new combination Madasenecio crassissimus was published in 2026.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is recommended to keep it above 3 °C. It can tolerate brief, slight drops in temperature if the substrate is dry, but cold accompanied by moisture considerably increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain its compact growth habit and purple edges. A target DLI PAR of 12–20 mol/m²/day is recommended, with soft or filtered sun during the hours of highest summer intensity. Gradual acclimatization prevents damage to the leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. In warm conditions, it may slow its activity during the summer and grow more vigorously when temperatures drop. Water thoroughly during the growing season and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the dormant period, significantly reduce watering, especially if temperatures are high.
🌸 Flowering
It produces elevated inflorescences on long peduncles, with numerous small flower heads of daisy-like yellow flowers. Flowering usually appears between summer and autumn, although it may vary depending on the climate and growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, providing high levels of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
