Rebutia marsoneri Werderm.
🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to depressed-globose cactus with a dark olive-green epidermis, which can reach about 6 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter. With age, it may form compact clusters. It has about 16 low ribs, divided into rounded tubercles arranged in a spiral. The areoles are oval and white, with numerous fine and flexible, rather bristle-like spines, generally white, yellowish, or slightly brownish. The spination can vary significantly between populations and forms, a characteristic that has led to numerous horticultural names.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to northwestern Argentina, especially the provinces of Jujuy and Salta, where it grows in rocky mountain environments at approximately 1,000 to 1,500 m altitude. It is part of the Cactaceae family. In Lodé's 2026 taxonomy, Rebutia krainziana, R. sieperdaiana, and other historical names are associated with R. marsoneri.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimatized specimens. In winter, it should be kept protected from humidity, especially when temperatures drop.
☀️ Lighting
Requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain a compact habit and stimulate abundant flowering. During active growth, an approximate total of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimatization to intense radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. From spring onwards, resume watering, preferably abundant and spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During active growth, it can receive water more frequently, always with fast drainage and good ventilation. Prolonged excess humidity promotes root rot.
🌸 Flowering
Very floriferous. In spring, it produces numerous flowers from the base of the stem, large in relation to the size of the plant, generally intense yellow to orange-yellow, forming a striking crown around the body. Specimens grown under different names may show variations in floral color and size.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
