Pleiospilos nelii "Royal Flush" | Purple split rock
€10,60
🌱 A very slow-growing, compact, and practically stemless Pleiospilos nelii cultivar. It normally forms one or two pairs of opposite, very thick, fleshy, and hemispherical leaves, fused at the base. The leaves feature a characteristic central cleft and an exceptionally intense coloration, ranging from pinkish-red to dark purple, speckled with small, raised, darker dots. With the annual renewal, the new pair of leaves emerges between the old ones, which gradually wither away.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural cultivar of Pleiospilos nelii, a South African species distributed in the Western Cape. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae. 'Royal Flush' does not correspond to an independent wild population, but rather a selection cultivated for its purple coloration and characteristic flowering.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when dry. In cultivation, it is especially important to avoid keeping the substrate moist during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high light levels to maintain the characteristic purple coloration of 'Royal Flush'. It is recommended to exceed 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR, with direct sun or very intense light.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It can be active when moisture and suitable temperatures are available, although it reduces activity during periods of intense heat. During active growth, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. When forming the new pair of leaves, excess water should be avoided: the old leaves should gradually wither rather than remaining turgid and accumulating.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large flowers, up to about 6–7.5 cm in diameter, with numerous intense pink to deep pink petals and a contrasting white center. They open in the afternoon and close after nightfall. Flowering usually occurs in spring; in Spain, approximately between March and May, although the timing may vary depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
