🌱 Morphology
And with little teeth... Small perennial succulent of the Aizoaceae family, with a compact center from which long, woody branches emerge—initially reddish and turning grayish with age—that sprawl across the ground or climb through vegetation. On young branches, the leaves are clustered closely together, while on long stems, they appear more spaced out, leaving the stem visible. They are opposite, fleshy, and soft leaves, measuring 25–35 × 7–10 mm, with their bases fused and clasping the stem. The upper surface is flattened, and the lower surface features a pronounced keel toward the apex. The margins and keel are provided with 1–6 small brittle teeth, while the entire surface features tiny tubercles that give it a velvety touch. This combination of long branches and toothed leaves distinguishes it from other Odontophorus, which usually form much more compact groups.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to South Africa and is distributed in Namaqualand, Northern Cape, approximately between Steinkopf and Springbok. It grows on shale slopes and Nama quartzite outcrops within the Succulent Karoo biome. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. SANBI currently considers it Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC in dry conditions. The available hardiness reference is horticultural, so it should be interpreted with the plant completely dry and protected from prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high lighting, with a target DLI PAR greater than 20 mol/m²/day during growth. Direct sun promotes the compact development of the center and a good expression of the gray-green and reddish tones of the young stems.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is an Aizoaceae adapted to the seasonal regime of Namaqualand, active during the cool season and dormant during the summer. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During summer dormancy, waterings should be spaced out significantly, avoiding keeping the substrate moist at high temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary bright yellow flowers, frequently with a whitish base, which appear mainly on the long branches. In South Africa, flowering is recorded in July; in Madrid, this corresponds approximately to January–February. The flowers are fragrant and open during the central hours of the day.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
10 × 10 cm gourmet black pot.
