🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, subshrubby and cespitose, forming dense cushions up to about 10 cm in height. It has a characteristic tuberous root, resembling a small turnip, from which numerous short stems emerge. The leaves are erect, very narrow, triangular to almost semi-cylindrical, fleshy, smooth, and pointed, up to 4–5 cm long but only 2–3 mm thick. Their surface features small dark spots that can acquire reddish or purplish tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, mainly in the Eastern Cape and areas of the Little Karoo. It grows in stony grasslands and quartzite plains, often among grasses and scrubland, in areas with rainfall distributed throughout the year. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae. Its conservation status is Least Concern (LC) and the population is considered stable.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC if kept completely dry. The indicated resistance comes from cultivation experience and should not be extrapolated to prolonged periods of cold and dampness.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very high light levels, with a target above 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth, although during summer it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun and excess heat.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its main activity is concentrated in the cool seasons, and it produces its flowers during the austral winter. During the active period, provide abundant watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next. As summer approaches, waterings are progressively reduced, and during dormancy, it is kept almost dry, especially avoiding the combination of heat and humidity.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers up to about 3.5 cm in diameter, with pink to purple petals, generally marked by a darker central stripe. Natural flowering is concentrated in July and August in the Southern Hemisphere, which corresponds approximately to January–February in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
