€31,80
🌱 Morphology
Small Mammillaria with slow to moderate growth, generally solitary, although it may produce basal offsets with age and form small clusters. The dark green body is globose to slightly oblong and reaches approximately 7–7.5 cm in height and 4.5–5 cm in diameter. The tubercles are practically hidden by a dense covering of white, translucent, comb-like radial spines measuring about 2–3.5 mm. It has 1–3 central spines, initially reddish and later dark brown, up to 8–14 mm long, with the longest one frequently curved or hooked. This combination of dark centrals and pectinate radials distinguishes it from Mammillaria bombycina.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Mexico, mainly in Aguascalientes and Jalisco, with populations located at approximately 2,000 to 2,400 m. It grows on highly exposed rock faces, often in cracks and on inclined surfaces, associated with mosses, lichens, grasses, and other xerophytes. In Aguascalientes, populations have been located between 2,024 and 2,417 m, where solitary specimens and small colonies are frequent.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −5 ºC for brief periods and provided the substrate is completely dry. In cultivation, it is advisable to protect it from prolonged frosts and cold humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light to develop compact spination and encourage flowering. Direct sun is recommended, performing a gradual adaptation if it comes from shaded conditions. As a reference, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is suitable during active growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until it is kept practically dry during the winter. It is especially sensitive to excess water.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a crown of flowers approximately 2 cm in size, in shades ranging from pinkish-white to pale pink, with a more intense center. In cultivation, flowering has been observed mainly in spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and maintains turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
