🔍 Morphology
Succulent caudiciform plant from the Euphorbiaceae family, highly prized for its thickened, grayish, and knobby trunk, shaped like a bottle or a rounded belly. This caudex can reach a diameter of about 30 cm. Large leaves sprout from its upper end, with long fleshy petioles, rounded and divided into 3–5 lobes, with clear veins. The inflorescences rise above the foliage and display small coral, red, or orange flowers. The fruits are three-lobed capsules that darken as they ripen.
📍 Distribution and habitat
Native to southern Mexico and Central America, with a natural presence from Mexico to Nicaragua. It grows in warm tropical environments that are seasonally dry. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in numerous tropical regions and can become naturalized outside its area of origin. Euphorbiaceae family.
🌡️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. Tolerates minimum temperatures close to 4–5 °C in dry conditions, but not frost. It is recommended to protect it from the cold, especially if the substrate is moist.
☀️ Lighting
Prefers a very bright location, with soft sun or bright partial shade. It tolerates direct sun if gradually acclimated, although intense exposure with extreme heat can damage the leaves. As a reference, a PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, adapted to the growing conditions.
🌸 Flowering
It can flower intermittently for much of the year if it has enough heat and light. Its coral or red-orange flowers appear in terminal inflorescences that stand out above the leaves. After pollination, it develops fleshy fruits that turn brown as they ripen.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Growth depends on temperature, light, and water availability. Water thoroughly during the active period and let the substrate dry before watering again. Reduce watering during low temperatures or when it loses its leaves. Waterlogging can cause the caudex to rot.
🚀 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with high levels of bioavailable calcium. Calcium contributes to tissue firmness and the maintenance of turgidity, while potassium promotes water balance.
⚠️ Caution
The sap and fruits are toxic, and the seeds are especially dangerous if ingested. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, use gloves when handling it, and keep it out of reach of children and animals.
