🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing ornamental cultivar with thick, fleshy leaves arranged in a compact rosette. Its abruptly truncated tips form wide, translucent, frosted-looking windows with whitish tones reminiscent of ice or freshly fallen snow. These windows can feature variable patterns and hues against a green background and are the main attraction of this selection.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
Horticultural cultivar of Haworthia maughanii, with no known wild locality of its own. The species originates from the Little Karoo in the Western Cape province, South Africa, south of Calitzdorp. It lives in a very restricted natural area, among stones and under the protection of shrubs; it can remain partially buried, with only the leaf windows exposed to light. Its contractile roots allow it to sink into the soil during dry periods, an adaptation that reduces exposure to heat and dehydration. The name Haworthia maughanii was treated as Haworthia truncata var. maughanii in older classifications.
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is recommended to protect it from frost and keep it above -1 °C, especially if the substrate is damp.
☀️ Lighting
Requires abundant, filtered light or bright semi-shade. Avoid intense direct sun, which can burn the leaves and damage their windows. A target DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It can grow when moderate temperatures, adequate light, and water availability coincide. Water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out before repeating. Reduce watering during episodes of intense heat if its activity slows down. Fast drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
🌸 Flowering
Produces thin floral stems with small, whitish flowers that are discreet compared to the attractiveness of its leaf windows.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with high potassium and bioavailable calcium content. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
