€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent with a creeping and tufted habit, forming clumps approximately 5–10 cm tall and up to 30 cm in diameter. The stems are very short and branched, with fleshy, soft, and elongated leaves arranged in two opposite rows. The leaves are tongue-shaped, with a pointed apex and rounded margins, and may feature lines of translucent cells along the margins and the keel. Unlike Glottiphyllum oligocarpum, the leaves are shiny and lack the characteristic whitish waxy coating. In bright light, they can take on gray, reddish, or purple hues.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is distributed across a belt of land located north of the Swartberg mountains, in the South African provinces of Western and Eastern Cape, from Prince Albert towards Willowmore and Jansenville. It grows mainly on clay-shale soils, often sheltered by shrubs, and also in areas with quartz. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. SANBI classifies it as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC under dry conditions and for short periods.
☀️ Lighting
It requires high light levels during active growth. It can be grown in full sun or very bright partial shade, ensuring availability of more than 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Intense lighting keeps the leaves more compact and encourages the appearance of reddish and purple tones; in low light, they tend to elongate and turn a darker green color.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary, yellow, daisy-like flowers, up to about 4 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs mainly in autumn.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is primarily a species that grows during the cool months, with activity especially marked from late winter and throughout the spring. With the intense heat of summer, it enters dormancy. During the active period, provide abundant watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next application. In summer, watering is significantly reduced, keeping it almost dry, although it can tolerate small amounts if conditions are cool and the plant shows signs of dehydration. Excess water can cause epidermis ruptures and promote root rot.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
