🌱 Morphology
Small succulent with a compact, dense rosette, measuring approximately 6–8 cm in diameter according to the traditional description. Its leaves are very thick, oval, and taper to a sharp point, glabrous and dark purple to violet, with muted tones that explain the former epithet lurida. The described inflorescence reaches about 25 cm and branches into two stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species described from a collection made by Edward Palmer in 1906 in a rocky canyon near Tobar, Durango, Mexico. Its exact natural habitat is not sufficiently documented. Family Crassulaceae, series Urbiniae. Historical synonym: Urbinia lurida Rose. Its identity remains controversial: the plant presented as a rediscovery in 2011 differs from the original description in size, leaf color and flowers. The original species may be extinct, and it should not be assumed that all specimens cultivated under this name are authentic.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a (−1.1 °C) as a conservative cultivation reference, not as a proven minimum tolerance. It is recommended to protect it from frost and damp cold, especially due to the uncertainty regarding the identity of the plants cultivated under this name.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with gradual acclimatization. Indicative PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant lighting helps maintain a compact habit and promotes purple coloration; during episodes of extreme heat, it is advisable to avoid the most intense sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, watering should be spaced out, keeping the substrate almost dry when temperatures are low. It is important to avoid water sitting in the rosette and prolonged moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
The original description records small flowers, measuring 6–7 mm, with dark red corollas and pointed petals. Plants subsequently attributed to this species have been described with larger pink flowers, another difference that fuels the controversy over its identity.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during the winter dormancy period.
