€7,95
🌱 Morphology
A small botanical variety of Echeveria setosa, extraordinarily compact and characterized by its tiny leaves, which can measure around 1.5 cm in length, one of the smallest leaf sizes recorded within the genus.
Forms a small, densely imbricated rosette composed of fleshy, obovate to oblong leaves, deep green in color and covered with numerous white or translucent hairs that give it the characteristic velvety appearance of E. setosa. The cilia are especially important in this species and make the plant look very striking despite its small size.
The combination of tiny leaves and abundant indumentum makes this variety a true botanical miniature, very different from the larger forms of E. setosa.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae · Series Ciliatae. It is a variety of Echeveria setosa, a Mexican species associated with mountain environments. The phylogenetic revision published in 2026 places E. setosa within a group that has traditionally been included in the Ciliatae series. The same work proposes moving certain Mexican species of Echeveria to the new genus Balbinaea, so the nomenclature of this group is currently under revision.
❄️ Temperature
USDA zone 9a. Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6 ºC on occasion when kept completely dry. In cultivation, it is advisable to protect it from the combination of low temperatures and persistent moisture.
☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade. Indicative DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It needs abundant light to maintain a compact rosette and preserve its short growth. It can receive gentle direct sunlight, but in Madrid it is recommended to protect it from the most intense midday sun during the summer, especially during periods of extreme heat.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. Due to its small size, it is advisable to avoid both overwatering and prolonged periods of moisture around the neck.
In autumn, watering should be gradually reduced, and during winter dormancy, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescences rise above the small rosette and produce the characteristic tubular flowers of Echeveria setosa, generally reddish or pink with a yellow interior. The flowers contrast particularly well with the white-haired foliage.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
