🌱 Morphology
A relatively fast-growing horticultural cultivar or mutation that develops a compact rosette, generally without a visible stem. In adult specimens, it can reach approximately 20–25 cm in height and up to 25–30 cm in diameter, although the size depends heavily on growing conditions. It may produce offsets and form clusters over time.
The leaves are very fleshy and exhibit an extraordinary characteristic: they curl in on themselves, forming tubes that are open at the end, resembling small trumpets. This foliar deformation is the trait that gives the cultivar its name and provides the rosette with a sculptural architecture, very different from that of a conventional Echeveria.
The coloration varies between greyish-green, bluish-green, mauve, and pink, with pinkish and violet tones intensifying under high lighting. The tips of the leaves may acquire a more intense pink coloration.
Water is an especially delicate point for this cultivar: the tubes formed by the leaves can retain droplets inside. For this reason, watering should be directed at the substrate, and water should be prevented from remaining inside the leaves, especially when ventilation is insufficient.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. As it is a horticultural cultivar or mutation, it has no natural distribution, nor is it appropriate to assign it an infrageneric section or series of Echeveria.
Its exact origin is not conclusively documented. The most widely held hypothesis considers ‘Pink Trumpet’ to be a mutation of Echeveria ‘Pinky’, a hybrid attributed to Echeveria shaviana × Echeveria cante. However, other parents have also been proposed, including E. runyonii ‘Topsy Turvy’ and E. shaviana ‘Pink Frills’. Therefore, the genealogy should be considered unconfirmed.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −1 ºC occasionally, provided the plant is completely dry and protected from humidity.
It is not recommended to expose it to frosts or prolonged periods of temperatures near 0 ºC. In this Echeveria, the combination of cold, humidity, and water retained inside the tubular leaves significantly increases the risk of rot.
During winter, it is advisable to keep it in a bright place, protected from rain and with good ventilation.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative DLI PAR: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It requires high lighting to maintain the compact shape of the rosette and develop the greyish, violet, and pink tones that characterize the cultivar. Several sources recommend several hours of direct sun per day, although during the hottest seasons, it is advisable to avoid the most intense midday sun.
Sun exposure should be increased progressively when the plant comes from a protected environment. In Madrid, during heatwaves, it may be advisable to provide light protection during the middle of the day while maintaining a high DLI.
Insufficient lighting causes the leaves to lose color, separate, and the rosette to adopt a less compact structure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. When grown in Spain, it develops most of its activity during the warm seasons, especially in spring and summer, while the decrease in photoperiod and temperatures reduces its activity during the winter.
During the active growth period, it is recommended to perform abundant watering and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Water should be applied directly to the substrate and never inside the tubes formed by the leaves.
After watering, it is advisable to check that no droplets have been left retained in the leaf cavities and to provide good ventilation. During extreme heat episodes, if the plant slows its activity, watering should be spaced out.
In autumn, water intake should be reduced progressively, and during winter dormancy, the substrate should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces floral stems that rise above the rosette, with flowers approximately 20–35 mm long. The flowers may show pale pink, pink, or orange shades, with yellow contrasts on the inside.
Flowering occurs mainly during spring and summer, although it may vary depending on the lighting, temperature, and maturity of the plant.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
