🌱 Morphology
Horticultural hybrid of undocumented parentage, selected for its extraordinary compact structure and the color transformation of its leaves. It forms a dense and symmetrical rosette about 10–15 cm in diameter, with fleshy, rigid, obovate to spatulate leaves ending in a mucronate tip. The foliage starts as an intense green and can take on bronze, copper, dark red, and burgundy tones when it receives sufficient light and experiences cool nights or some water restriction. With age, it can produce offsets and form small clumps.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Crassulaceae family.
It is not a wild botanical species: ‘Impi’ is a hybrid cultivar of horticultural origin, associated with the selection of Echeverias carried out in South Africa. It should not be attributed with its own natural distribution nor assigned an Echeveria taxonomic series. Its name comes from Zulu and refers to a group of warriors, a particularly appropriate designation for the firm and compact appearance of the rosette.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9a. Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC for short periods, always with dry substrate. It is not recommended to expose it to prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with an approximate PAR DLI of 20–30 mol/m²/day. Intense lighting keeps the rosette compact and enhances the bronze, coppery, and reddish tones. In very hot climates, it may benefit from protection from the most intense midday sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In winter, watering is spaced out considerably. Water should be prevented from collecting in the center of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flower stalks that clearly stand out from the rosette and bell-shaped flowers, generally in pink, coral, or orange tones, with a lighter or yellowish interior. Flowering usually occurs during the growing season, but no sufficiently reliable information has been found regarding the age of the first flowering or its self-fertility.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
