🔍 Morphology
Bulbous plant that forms small clumps by producing lateral bulbs. It develops oval or heart-shaped leaves with well-defined petioles, bright green in color and splashed with irregular dark green or purple spots. The undersides and petioles can take on purplish hues. Its mottled foliage is its main ornamental appeal.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family:
It is native to eastern and southern Africa, from Tanzania to South Africa, including Mozambique and Eswatini. It grows in scrubland environments, clearings, and partially shaded areas.
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family. In some classifications, it is included in the Ledebouria genus as Ledebouria petiolata.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 9b. It tolerates minimum temperatures close to −4 ºC only as a guideline and under favorable conditions. When in a pot, it is advisable to protect it from severe frosts and keep the bulb sheltered from excess moisture during the cold season.
☀️ Lighting: It prefers bright partial shade or filtered light, although it tolerates gentle morning sun. Too intense exposure can burn the leaves. As a cultivation reference, an approximate PAR DLI of 10–15 moles of photons per day is recommended.
🌸 Flowering: It produces flower stems with clusters of small star-shaped flowers, initially whitish and later pale green. Flowering can last for several months, depending on the climate and cultivation, although the flowers are discreet compared to the foliage.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It grows mainly during the warm months and may lose part or all of its leaves when temperatures drop. During growth, moderate watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. During dormancy, watering should be reduced and waterlogging avoided, without keeping the bulb unnecessarily moist.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with assimilable potassium and calcium, avoiding excess nitrogen.
