🌱 Morphology
A succulent, rhizomatous, and acaulescent plant with slow growth and an erect and compact habit, forming a rosette of robust and densely arranged leaves. New shoots emerge from the rhizome, allowing the plant to form progressively wider clusters.

The leaves are broad, rigid, fleshy, and lanceolate, with acute tips. They feature a marked contrast between a dark green central zone and greyish-green or silvery margins, with an irregular and slightly marbled pattern. The combination of both colors produces the characteristic silvery appearance that gives the cultivar its name. The leaves can reach approximately 30–60 cm in length, although the final size depends on growing conditions.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Silver Flame’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin of Dracaena zeylanica and, therefore, does not have a natural distribution of its own.

The species of origin corresponds to the plant traditionally known as Sansevieria zeylanica, native to Sri Lanka, adapted to warm and relatively dry environments. Its succulent leaves and rhizome allow it to store water and withstand periods of water scarcity.

In horticulture, the name Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Silver Flame’ has also been used, but the RHS currently places ‘Silver Flame’ under Sansevieria zeylanica.

❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally when kept completely dry and protected from humidity. For safe cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 10 ºC.

Cold combined with a damp substrate can cause damage to the roots and rhizome. During winter, it must be kept protected from frost and with very infrequent watering.

It prefers abundant light, although it also tolerates lower light levels. Good light intensity promotes compact growth and helps maintain the contrast between the dark green center and the silvery margins.

It can receive a few hours of gentle direct sun after progressive acclimatization. In low-light conditions, it can survive, but growth slows down and the expression of the leaf pattern may be less intense. Horticultural sources describe ‘Silver Flame’ as a plant tolerant to different lighting levels.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its vegetative activity is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases when temperatures drop.

During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Its fleshy leaves and rhizome act as water storage organs, so it tolerates drought better than excess moisture.

In autumn, waterings should be progressively spaced out, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding it getting trapped in the center of the rosette. Excess water is one of the main risks for these plants due to the possibility of root rot.

🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation, especially in well-established adult specimens. The inflorescence emerges from the base of the plant and can clearly exceed the height of the rosette.

The flowers are small, tubular, and greenish-white, grouped along the floral stem and generally fragrant. In the traditional sansevieria group, flowers appear in short inflorescences and can give off an appreciable fragrance.

During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
