🌱 Morphology
A small perennial succulent, barely 6 cm tall during flowering, which forms dense cushions through numerous clustered rosettes. The specific name socialis refers precisely to this tendency to grow in colonies.
The rosettes measure approximately 1.5–2 cm in diameter and are formed by leaves arranged in four rows, very close together and regularly imbricated. The leaves are flat, slightly fleshy, ovate to almost circular, about 4–7 × 4–6 mm, glabrous on the surface but with a characteristic dense row of cilia on the margins. They are green, although they frequently develop a reddish hue towards the edges, especially with high light levels.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to the Eastern Cape, South Africa, with an extremely restricted distribution between the vicinities of King William's Town, Hogsback, Kommadagga, and Fort Brown. It is known from very few localities.
It is an obligate cremnophyte, meaning it is a plant specialized in living on walls and cliffs. It grows exclusively in rock crevices, usually on south or southeast-facing walls, where the roots are protected inside small fissures and the environment is cooler and more shaded than the surrounding rock surface.
It belongs to the Crassulaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It comes from a relatively temperate part of the Eastern Cape, but its growth in protected crevices means it is not advisable to directly extrapolate air temperature to the plant's hardiness. It is recommended to protect it from intense frosts and maintain excellent ventilation when temperatures are low.
☀️ Lighting
In the wild, it grows mainly on south and southeast-facing rock walls, so it does not necessarily need to be grown in full sun all day. Intense but filtered light or gentle sun is more appropriate than scorching exposure during the middle of the day.
Indicative DLI PAR: 10–18 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Excessively intense light can cause stress and the loss of its compact green appearance; with good light, the leaves can develop their characteristic reddish margins.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It shows activity mainly during the cooler periods, with growth particularly favorable during winter and spring. SANBI notes June-October as the natural growth period and recommends that it receive small amounts of water even during its summer dormancy to prevent excessive root desiccation.
In cultivation, it is recommended to provide moderate to abundant watering during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry out before watering again. During the summer, if temperatures are high and growth slows down, the frequency should be reduced, but do not keep it completely dry for excessively long periods, especially with small specimens in pots.
The combination of a very well-draining substrate, good ventilation, and adjusted watering is especially important: in the wild, the water available in the crevices is combined with immediate drainage.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering appears on a thin, erect peduncle of approximately 3–6 cm, which can be simple or slightly branched. The flowers are small, white, and cup-shaped, with petals of approximately 2–2.5 mm.
A well-established plant can produce numerous inflorescences simultaneously, covering the cushion with small white flowers. In Spain, flowering occurs around March-May, depending on temperatures and the cultivation cycle.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously moistened. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
