🌱 Morphology
A small, almost stemless succulent that forms dense mats or small domes. Each body, about 2 cm long and 1.5 cm thick, is made up of two fused fleshy leaves, globose in appearance and clearly fig-shaped, with a central fissure separating two lobes. The epidermis is grayish-green, often tinged with purple, and features a very characteristic pattern of green or reddish dots and small lines that form horseshoe-like arcs around the fissure.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Western Cape Province, South Africa. It lives in the Robertson Karoo, especially on rocky slopes, in shale and tillite crevices, as well as among quartz pebbles and under nurse plants. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC for short periods with the substrate completely dry. It is a species sensitive to frost and, above all, to the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Requires plenty of light, although in its habitat, it may grow protected among rocks or under nurse plants. During active growth, it is recommended to reach a DLI PAR greater than 20 mol/m²/day, avoiding excessive radiation and temperature during summer dormancy.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It begins its activity at the end of summer and throughout autumn, continuing growth during the cool months. After flowering, it develops new leaves inside the old ones, which dry up to form a thin protective sheath. During growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely; from late spring and throughout the summer, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
Fragrant flowers, pink, white, or pale yellow in color, long-lasting and relatively large in relation to the plant body. They begin opening at dusk and may remain open during the day. Flowering occurs in autumn in South Africa, approximately March–May in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
7 × 7 cm gourmet black pot.
