🔍 Morphology
Small succulent with a compact, decumbent growth habit, capable of forming small clumps. The stems can intertwine with surrounding vegetation. It is heterophyllous: it develops one pair of leaves protected by a papery sheath and another pair of fleshy leaves, triangular in section, papillose, and with a recurved apex. The functional leaves resemble the genus Argyroderma in shape and reach about 3 cm in length. The fruit is a 5-locular capsule, a characteristic that distinguishes it from Argyroderma fissum.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, in the Western Cape, especially around Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp, as well as the Knersvlakte region. It inhabits gentle slopes or flat surfaces with clay soil, generally with a thin layer of quartz. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA Zone and temperature
USDA 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC when kept completely dry. True hardiness depends on the duration of cold, substrate moisture, and the plant's acclimation.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting during growth, with direct sun or very bright partial shade and a target of over 20 mol of PAR photons/m²/day. High radiation helps maintain compact growth and proper leaf formation.
🌸 Flowering
Flowers generally appear in groups of three and measure approximately 1.8–2.5 cm in diameter. They are violet-pink to rose-purple. In the Southern Hemisphere, they are observed mainly between May and July, so in Spain, this corresponds approximately to November–January.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It grows primarily during the cool, wet season and enters dormancy during the dry period. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, water supply should be drastically reduced, especially at high temperatures, respecting the dormancy period and maintaining excellent ventilation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
