€31,80
🌱 Morphology
A Japanese cultivar of Astrophytum myriostigma, with a solitary, globose to short-cylindrical body, and generally with 5 ribs. It is characterized by combining the spectacular white flecking and epidermal patterns of ‘Onzuka’ with the prominent, pointed tubercles that interrupt the rib margins, characteristic of ‘Kikko’. The areoles remain prominent between deep transverse fissures, creating a geometric relief reminiscent of a tortoise shell. It lacks spines. The quantity, distribution, and design of the white trichomes can vary significantly between specimens.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A cultivar of Japanese horticultural origin, obtained through selection and nursery cultivation; it does not correspond to an independent natural population. Its parent species, Astrophytum myriostigma, is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of central and northeastern Mexico, where it grows primarily on stony, calcareous terrain among xerophilous scrub. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC (19.4 ºF) if kept completely dry and properly acclimatized. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dormant and with dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light during active growth and tolerates several hours of direct sun once acclimatized. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR promotes compact growth and allows for the proper development of both the tubercle relief and the characteristic white patterns of ‘Onzuka’.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly from spring to early autumn. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, it must be kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures. The substrate must provide rapid drainage and prevent moisture from remaining around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are similar to those of Astrophytum myriostigma, pale, bright yellow in color, and appear in the apical area during the warm period. In Madrid, flowering occurs mainly between May and July.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
