🔍 Morphology: Small perennial succulent, low-growing and caespitose, which can form clumps up to about 5 cm in height. The stems branch from the base and feature pairs of fleshy leaves that are opposite and partially fused, forming angular and compact bodies. The leaves are pale bluish-green, with an approximately triangular cross-section and a slightly rough surface. Remains of old leaves may persist around the stems, protecting new growth.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family: It is native to the arid regions of western South Africa, mainly in the Western Cape province, in the vicinity of Vanrhynsdorp and other locations in the Succulent Karoo region. It grows on stony terrain and well-draining mineral soils. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. Its synonyms include Ruschia dualis, Argyroderma duale, and Mesembryanthemum duale.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 9a. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC when dry and well-acclimated. There are reports of specimens showing no damage at temperatures near −2 ºC, but there is insufficient evidence to consider much lower temperatures as a guarantee for container cultivation. The substrate must be kept completely dry during frost.
☀️ Lighting: It requires plenty of light to maintain compact growth and good leaf coloration. It tolerates direct sun during cool periods, although in conditions of high summer temperatures, it may benefit from bright partial shade. During the active period, PAR radiation greater than 20 moles of photons per day is recommended.
🌸 Flowering: It produces small, solitary flowers approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, pink in color, which stand out against the blue-green foliage. Flowering occurs mainly during the cool season.
💧 Growth cycle and watering: Summer dormancy. It comes from a region with primarily winter rainfall, so it is active during the cooler months. Watering should be concentrated during the active period, providing water abundantly and allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. When temperatures rise and summer begins, its activity decreases, so watering should be spaced out considerably and suspended during periods of intense heat. With the drop in temperatures in late summer and early autumn, it gradually resumes activity.
🚀 Nutrition: During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
