Aloe rauhii — Snowflake Aloe
🌱 Morphology
A small, stemless aloe of extraordinary beauty that forms compact rosettes and can eventually produce dense clusters through offsets. Its fleshy, lanceolate leaves are grayish-green and covered with numerous elongated white spots, many of which have a characteristic H shape, reminiscent of snowflakes. The margins feature small white teeth. With very intense lighting, the leaves can take on reddish-brown or purple hues. Mature rosettes reach about 10–15 cm, making it a true miniature species.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to southwestern Madagascar, where it grows in dry scrublands and rocky areas, associated with sandy or stony, well-draining substrates. Aloe rauhii was described by G. W. Reynolds and published in 1963. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, Alooideae tribe, Aloe genus.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to -1 ºC. In cultivation, it is recommended to protect it from frost and, especially, to avoid combining cold with a moist substrate.
☀️ Lighting
During the growing period, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. High lighting keeps the rosette compact and enhances the contrast between the grayish-green background and the white spots. It tolerates direct sun, although in Madrid, protection is recommended during the central hours of days with maximum summer radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. It is recommended to water when the plant is growing, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the summer, it can receive regular watering if temperatures are not extreme, while in winter, this is reduced drastically, keeping the plant practically dry during the dormant period. This cycle aligns with the seasonal conditions of its native area and the cultivation recommendations of the RHS.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a simple, occasionally branched inflorescence that can rise up to 30–50 cm above the rosette. The racemes contain tubular flowers ranging from coral pink to scarlet, lighter towards the opening. Flowering occurs mainly during the winter. There is not enough documentation to consider it re-blooming through several pulses within the same season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during winter dormancy.
9x9 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
