🌱 Morphology
It is one of the smaller Aloes. It is practically stemless and forms compact rosettes about 7–15 cm high and up to 20 cm in diameter, which produce numerous offsets and eventually form dense colonies. Its leaves are short, lanceolate, very acuminate and incurved, bluish-green or grayish-green. The most distinctive features are its surface covered with small tubercles or soft whitish spines, present mainly on the underside, and its toothed margins with soft white teeth.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is endemic to South Africa, with distribution from the Little Karoo to the Eastern Cape, including areas near Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth, Somerset East and Grahamstown. It lives on rocky slopes, dry scrubland and renosterveld, often among rocks or under the protection of shrubs, on well-drained soils, even clayey ones. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11. It is one of the relatively cold-hardy dwarf Aloes and can temporarily withstand temperatures close to −4 °C when dry, but in pots we recommend keeping it above 5 °C and avoiding cold, humidity, and wet substrate occurring simultaneously.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It tolerates and benefits from a lot of light, which keeps its rosettes compact and enhances the grayish-blue tone and white tubercles. In Madrid, it is advisable to progressively acclimate it to direct sunlight and protect it from the most extreme summer sun if it is in a small pot.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, although it comes from a region with marked seasonality and can slow down during periods of heat and drought. In cultivation, it can grow at different times if it has moderate temperatures and water. Water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, especially with low temperatures, significantly space out waterings.
🌸 Flowering
It produces simple, erect, unbranched racemes, about 25–45 cm long, with hanging tubular flowers from scarlet red to orange-red, exceptionally orange. In Madrid, flowering usually occurs approximately from February–May, although it may vary depending on growing conditions.
