🌱 Morphology
Small hybrid by Kelly Griffin that forms compact rosettes approximately 10 cm in diameter and height, with a tendency to produce abundant offsets and form clusters with age. Its leaves are fleshy, triangular, and grayish-green, decorated with small white spots. The finely serrated margins take on an intense pink, red, or orange-red coloration, which is accentuated by high light levels. With cold or strong sunlight, a pinkish coloration may also appear on the leaf surface.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae. It is an American horticultural hybrid created by Kelly Griffin during his time at Rancho Soledad Nurseries, California. It is also marketed under the name Aloe ‘Donnie’. Its exact parentage has not been reliably published, so no specific genealogy should be attributed to it.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9
Tolerates minimum temperatures of approximately −6 °C in dry conditions and for short periods. In pots, it is recommended to protect it from frost and, above all, from cold combined with damp substrate. Commercial sources place its hardiness around 20 °F (−6.7 °C).
☀️ Lighting
From bright light to gentle sun, with progressive acclimatization. High light intensity intensifies the pink and red tones of the margins and keeps the rosette compact. An approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day is recommended. During the very intense summers in Madrid, it may appreciate protection from the midday sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It can remain active for a good part of the year when temperatures are moderate. It is recommended to water abundantly during growth and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In extreme heat or low temperatures, the frequency of watering is considerably reduced.
🌸 Flowering
Produces relatively tall flower spikes for the small size of the rosette, with tubular red or orange-red flowers. It may bloom during spring and summer, although the exact timing depends on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer rest.
9x9 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
