🌱 Morphology
Relatively fast-growing agave, generally solitary, which forms a spectacular open rosette approximately 80–100 cm tall and 1.5–2 m in diameter. The leaves are large, fleshy, and broadly lanceolate, deep green to yellowish-green in color, about 60–80 cm long and 14–17 cm wide, narrower at the base and widening towards the middle or upper third. The margins feature large, highly variable teeth that are dark red, chestnut, or grayish-brown, characteristically curved in different directions like small bull horns. The terminal spine is robust, about 3–5 cm, and can take on brownish tones. The impressions of the teeth on the underside of the leaves provide another of its most characteristic ornamental features.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to northwestern Mexico, mainly in Sonora, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua, on the western slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental. It grows at altitudes of approximately 900 to 1,900 m, on rocky slopes and large outcrops, in open oak and pine-oak forests with tropical vegetation influence. The species is listed as Vulnerable (VU) by the IUCN.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Below approximately −3/−4 ºC, it may begin to show leaf damage, so the combination of cold and humidity should especially be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light, but in climates with very hot summers, it appreciates soft sun or bright partial shade during the central hours of the day, as excessively intense sunlight can yellow or burn the leaves. In Madrid, a position with morning sun and light protection against extreme summer sun can produce a better-looking rosette. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Growth is primarily spring-summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Moderate hydration during the summer accelerates growth, but water should never remain trapped around the roots. In autumn, inputs should be gradually reduced until kept practically dry during winter.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: after many years of growth, it develops a single large inflorescence, and the rosette that flowers dies afterwards. The floral stalk can reach approximately 4.5–7 m in height and forms a branched panicle with numerous yellowish-green flowers, about 5.5–6.5 cm long. Flowering occurs mainly between December and May in its natural range. The first flowering has been documented starting at approximately 10–12 years, although the age depends on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
