🌱 Morphology
A small cactus with a grayish-green to dark green body, occasionally with purplish hues, just 1–3 cm in diameter, which often produces numerous offsets from the base and can form large clumps. Each head is globose-depressed and features flat tubercles arranged in a spiral. The areoles are narrow and elongated, with 6–12 fine, pectinate, and adpressed spines that lie against the body, generally brown, with no central spines. The roots form a tuberous system that is highly developed in relation to the tiny stem, an adaptation to its seasonally dry mountain habitat.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the Chuquisaca department, especially in the Pasopaya and Presto area, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 2,700 to 3,200 m. It inhabits rocky slopes and mountain environments subject to strong radiation, a wide thermal range, and a marked dry season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Sulcorebutia pasopayana is one of its most commonly used historical names.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −5 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must remain completely dry, especially around the root neck.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and very intense lighting to maintain compact growth, develop characteristic spination, and stimulate flowering. During active growth, a daily light integral of approximately 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimation to intense sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. In spring, resume abundant but infrequent watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During active growth, it can be watered moderately, always with very fast drainage. Due to its tuberous root system and reduced neck, it is especially sensitive to excess moisture; a mineral and highly aerated substrate is essential.
🌸 Flowering
Very floriferous. Flowers emerge from the lower areoles, even near or partially hidden by the substrate surface, and reach approximately 2.5–3.5 cm. The petals are intense carmine to dark red, sometimes with orange tones toward the base; the stamens are purplish, and the style and stigmas are green. A well-developed colony can produce numerous flowers simultaneously.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high levels of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
