🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus with a grayish-green epidermis. With age, it may produce offsets and form small clusters. It features low, compact tubercles, small areoles, and abundant, fine, pectinate radial spines that lie very close to the body. This variety is notable for its golden yellow spines, a characteristic that gives rise to the name flavispina. The spines may take on darker tones with age.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, within the distribution area of Weingartia mentosa, in dry, open, and rocky mountainous environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Joël Lodé recognizes Weingartia mentosa and places related historical names, including flavissima and albissima, within this taxon.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Low temperatures must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and denser spination. Gradual acclimatization to the sun is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during winter. Watering resumes at the beginning of spring; provide abundant but spaced waterings, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between them. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential to prevent root issues.
🌸 Flowering
Lateral flowers, emerging near the base of the stem, relatively large in proportion to the body and generally in shades of pink, reddish, or magenta. Flowering occurs mainly during spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
