🌱 Morphology
Small cactus, globose to slightly depressed, with a dark green epidermis. It can remain solitary or form clusters with age. It features small, compact tubercles, narrow areoles, and abundant spines, formed by thin and relatively short radial spines, generally adpressed to the body, which can vary in color and rigidity depending on the population. The plant develops a robust root adapted to stony mountain soils.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the department of Cochabamba, Mizque province. The type population was located west of Mizque, at an altitude of about 2,600 m, growing on rocky slopes and in dry mountain environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name comes from Sulcorebutia mariana Swoboda, described in 1989 and subsequently combined as Weingartia mariana; Joël Lodé maintains Weingartia mariana in his taxonomic treatment.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Low temperatures must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes a compact habit and well-developed spination. Progressive acclimation to the sun is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. When spring growth begins, resume watering: abundant and spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers emerge laterally from the lower areoles and can reach about 4.5 cm in length. They feature reddish outer tepals and, inside, shades ranging from red to light violet; the stamens are yellow. The flowering is remarkable for its size in relation to the small body of the plant.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
