🌱 Morphology
Small, globose cactus with a very dark green epidermis and a slightly depressed apex. It can grow solitarily or form small clusters. It features around 14 ribs divided into tubercles, with yellowish areoles and a dense spination of about 20–25 white, fine, pectinate spines, closely appressed to the body. The spines, up to 3 mm long, form a characteristic whitish covering over the dark stem. It develops a robust root, adapted to stony terrain.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the department of Santa Cruz, north of Vallegrande, where it grows at approximately 1,900–2,100 m on white sandstone slopes, within the Andean Chaco dry forest. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Weingartia langeri is the name used for the taxon originally described as Sulcorebutia langeri.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimatized specimens. The combination of cold and humidity must be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes a compact habit and dense spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during winter. During active growth, abundant but infrequent watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. Rapid drainage is especially important, as excess humidity encourages rot.
🌸 Flowering
Produces numerous flowers in spring, large in proportion to the tiny body, of a bright yellow color, which contrast spectacularly with the dark green epidermis and white spination.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
