🌱 Morphology
Small cactus, globose to slightly depressed, with a green epidermis and flattened apex, reaching approximately 6 cm in diameter. It can grow solitary or form clusters with age. The stem is covered by numerous small tubercles, without clearly differentiated ribs, and by abundant, fine radial spines close to the body. It develops a taproot, a characteristic adaptation of these mountain cacti.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to Bolivia, mainly in the departments of Cochabamba and Potosí, where it inhabits altitudes between approximately 2,000 and 3,000 m, on rocky slopes and sandstone crevices. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Weingartia breviflora is the currently accepted name; among its numerous historical synonyms are Sulcorebutia breviflora, Rebutia breviflora, and Weingartia caineana. Lodé also established the combinations W. breviflora subsp. haseltonii and subsp. laui for forms previously separated.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Low temperatures must coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and abundant spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. During the active period, generous but spaced waterings are recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between them. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential, especially due to its thickened root.
🌸 Flowering
It is a very prolific flowering species. It produces numerous relatively large flowers compared to the body, mainly yellow or orange, which appear laterally and can cover the plant during bloom. The epithet breviflora refers to its short-tubed flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
