Echinocereus viridiflorus | Green pitaya cactus
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small cactus, generally solitary, although it can form small clusters with age. The stem is globose, ovoid, or short-cylindrical, green to grayish-green in color, and can reach approximately 12 cm in height. It has 10–15 low ribs, clearly divided into small tubercles. The areoles are small and close together. It produces approximately 11–20 radial spines and between 0 and 4 central spines, which vary in length, color, and arrangement depending on the population. The dense covering of spines can give the stem an almost woolly appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its natural distribution is very broad and includes the central and southern United States, from South Dakota and Wyoming to Texas, in addition to populations in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. It also reaches northern Mexico. It lives at approximately 900 to 2700 m of altitude in prairies, short-grass grasslands, open scrublands, and sparse forests, on sandy or clayey soils and rocky terrain. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 5a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −29 ºC in dry conditions and with properly acclimated specimens. It is one of the Echinocereus species with the highest cold resistance, provided it remains completely dry during extreme temperatures. Populations from southern areas may have different resistance than populations from more northern regions.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very high light levels, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates and requires several hours of direct sun. High light intensity promotes compact growth and dense spination, in addition to stimulating flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During winter, it should be kept cool, bright, and completely dry. It resumes growth with the rise in temperatures in spring. During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Its high cold resistance should not be confused with tolerance to humidity during dormancy: excellent drainage and a dry winter are essential.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are relatively small for the genus, but very characteristic, yellowish-green to green, occasionally with browner or reddish tones depending on the population. They are produced laterally on the stems. In Madrid, flowering can be expected mainly between May and June. The specific name viridiflorus means precisely "with green flowers."
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and bio-fungicides.
