🌱 Morphology
With a pseudocephalium crowned with lemons... Generally a solitary cactus with a globose and depressed body, which in nature can grow partially buried, while in cultivation it develops more globose or ovoid forms. It can reach about 15–20 cm in diameter. The apex, which is depressed, is densely covered with whitish or grayish wool. It features 16–18 ribs, occasionally up to 22, well-defined with small tubercles. The areoles are large, woolly, and slightly sunken. It develops 4–10 yellowish radial spines, robust and curved downward, about 2 cm long, and no central spine or one that is poorly differentiated.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is distributed throughout southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina, from areas near sea level up to about 420 m. It inhabits rocky outcrops in grasslands and pampas, where it can be partially protected among rocks and herbaceous vegetation. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC when kept dry and well-acclimated. During winter, it must be kept completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun, with progressive adaptation. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept practically dry and with good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces numerous bright lemon-yellow flowers, about 4–5 cm in diameter, which appear grouped around the woolly apex that acts as a pseudocephalium, appearing when the cactus reaches maturity. The contrast with the carmine-red stigma lobes is particularly striking. After flowering, it develops fleshy reddish to purple fruits.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
