🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus, with a grayish-green to dark green epidermis, which usually remains solitary or slowly forms clusters. The body features small, compact tubercles with narrow areoles provided with numerous fine radial spines, yellowish, silky, and hair-like in appearance, which are arranged very close to the surface and can reach nearly 1 cm in length. This delicate, golden spination is one of its most attractive features. It develops a napiform (turnip-shaped) root that is relatively powerful in relation to the small stem.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It originates from Bolivia, in the department of Chuquisaca, within the mountainous area of Tarabuco and its surroundings. It grows on rocky slopes in the Bolivian Andes, subjected to high radiation, strong thermal oscillations, and a marked dry season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The historical name Sulcorebutia tarabucoensis subsp. patriciae continues to be widely used among collectors.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must be kept completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun to maintain its compact habit and develop its characteristic golden spination. During active growth, an approximate integral of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimatization to the sun.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during winter. In spring, resume abundant but spaced watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During active growth, it can be watered more regularly, provided that drainage is fast and there is good ventilation. Excess moisture around the roots during cold weather must be avoided.
🌸 Flowering
Flowers appear laterally, near the base of the body, and are large in proportion to the size of the plant. In the W. tarabucoensis complex, red to dark magenta flowers predominate, although there is variation between populations and forms. An adult plant can produce several flowers simultaneously, forming a striking crown around the body.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
