🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to depressed cactus with a grayish-green to dark green epidermis that can acquire reddish tones in the sun. It forms numerous offsets and can form large clumps. It has about 13 poorly defined ribs, divided into rhomboidal tubercles, with narrow, sunken areoles. Spination is highly variable: spines can be white, yellow, reddish, brown, or almost black, ranging from appressed to notably projecting.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, mainly in the Cordillera de Cochabamba and areas of Cochabamba, Potosí, and Santa Cruz, where it inhabits altitudes of approximately 2,900 to 3,800 m, in dry, stony, and well-drained terrain. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. Weingartia steinbachii is the accepted name; Rebutia steinbachii and Sulcorebutia steinbachii are its historical combinations.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Due to its high-altitude origin, it withstands considerable cold, but moisture must be avoided during frosts.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. Progressive exposure to the sun promotes compact spination and intense coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during the winter. With the arrival of spring, resume watering, making it abundant but spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear laterally and are large in relation to the small body, reaching approximately 3.5 cm in length. They can be red, violet, or yellow, a variability characteristic of this species.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
