🌱 Morphology
Horticultural hybrid attributed to Tulista pumila ‘Donuts’ × Tulista minima, slow-growing with a compact rosette. Its leaves are fleshy, rigid, and triangular, ranging in color from green to olive green, and they develop large, very prominent white tubercles. Its most unique feature is these annular and irregular tubercles, which resemble small donuts but with variable contours: some form incomplete rings, while others are oval or display asymmetrical shapes. The combination of the robust character of T. pumila ‘Donuts’ with the more compact habit of T. minima produces an especially sculptural plant. The hybridization is considered attributed, as no formal publication has been located that unequivocally documents the breeder and the original cross.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a cultivated hybrid, so it has no natural distribution of its own. Its parents belong to Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae, and are native to the Western Cape of South Africa. The genus Tulista currently comprises four recognized species and is characterized by its stemless rosettes and hard, frequently tuberculate leaves.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. As it is a hybrid of T. pumila and T. minima, it is advisable to protect it from prolonged frosts and sustained moisture when temperatures are low.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and promote the expression of the tubercles. We recommend lighting equivalent to 12–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during active growth, with progressive adaptation to direct solar radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering — Summer dormancy
Summer dormancy. Its rhythm comes from parents adapted to the rainfall regime of the Western Cape, where growth is concentrated mainly from autumn to spring. It is recommended to water when the substrate is completely dry during the active period, allowing it to dry out between waterings. In summer, waterings are spaced out significantly and, with high temperatures, it can be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces an elevated inflorescence with small, whitish tubular flowers, characteristic of Tulista. Flowering usually occurs in late spring and early summer. No specific age for first flowering has been documented for this hybrid clone; it depends on the size and maturity reached in cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
