Trichocereus bridgesii (Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose ·
🌱 Morphology
A vigorously growing columnar cactus that can reach several meters in height and branch from the base. Light green to bluish-green stems, about 10–20 cm in diameter, with 4–8 markedly angular ribs. The areoles produce several rigid, yellowish or honey-colored spines, some up to 7–10 cm, one of the features that best distinguishes it from other cacti in the San Pedro group. The flowers are large, white, fragrant, and nocturnal, up to 15–20 cm long.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, especially the dry inter-Andean valleys of La Paz, Cochabamba, and other central areas of the country, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 to 3,000 m. It is used in religious rituals by the natives for its magical properties... It grows on rocky slopes, ravines, and dry scrublands. It belongs to Cactaceae, Cactoideae. Joël Lodé maintains Trichocereus bridgesii in his 2026 taxonomic treatment, as opposed to the Kew treatment, which considers it a synonym of Echinopsis lageniformis.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC when kept dry and for well-acclimatized specimens. Humid cold is much more dangerous than a temporary drop in temperature.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and very intense light, with a target DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ during growth. Exposure should be increased progressively for indoor-grown specimens.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures. From spring to early autumn, watering is resumed abundantly but spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings. The natural pattern combines growth during the warm, rainy season with a dry winter.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms as a mature specimen, but there is no reliable age established for the first flowering. Flowers appear mainly from late spring to summer, and each one remains open for approximately one night. It is self-incompatible: it requires pollen from another genetically different plant to produce seeds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
