🌱 Morphology

Perennial succulent, evergreen and mat-forming, which grows in dense clumps approximately 5–10 cm tall, although flowering stems may rise somewhat higher. The stems are numerous, trailing or ascending, and can take root upon contact with the substrate.

The leaves are sessile, fleshy, and cylindrical, relatively short, and green in color. During autumn and at low temperatures, they can acquire a distinct reddish coloration, which may spread across much of the foliage.

🌍 Distribution, habitat and family

Family: Crassulaceae.

Species widely distributed across Europe, the Mediterranean region, and northwestern Iran, including Spain. It grows in open, dry environments, especially on rocks, walls, roofs, crevices, and well-draining soils, where the roots have little depth of substrate.

This adaptation to very shallow and poor substrates explains its extraordinary ability to withstand periods of drought.

USDA Zone: 4–9 (approximate).

It is a highly cold-resistant species. Its tolerable minimum temperature is close to −20 °C in cultivation conditions, while other horticultural references place the species in even colder USDA zones.

Once well-established and with the substrate properly drained, it tolerates significant frosts. As always with succulent plants, resistance increases when the tissues and roots do not remain saturated with water during cold episodes.

Full sun or a very bright exposure is recommended. High illumination maintains compact growth and encourages the reddish coloration that appears especially during autumn and winter.

It can tolerate some partial shade, but with lower light intensity, the stems can become elongated and the mat loses density. Full sun.

💧 Growth cycle and irrigation

Opportunistic. It is an evergreen species capable of maintaining activity for a good part of the year. Growth is especially active during seasons with moderate temperatures, while it may slow down during episodes of intense heat or cold.

During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, subsequently allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again.

Its high tolerance to drought allows for widely spaced waterings once established. In winter, especially with low temperatures, water intake should be reduced and any persistent moisture avoided. The RHS confirms its good drought resistance and recommends a well-drained substrate.

🌸 Flowering

Flowering occurs mainly in summer. The flowering stems rise above the mat and produce branched inflorescences with numerous white, star-shaped flowers. The petals may have a slight pinkish tone on their outer face.

In Madrid's cultivation conditions, flowering can be expected approximately between June and August, depending on temperature trends.

🌿 Nutrition

During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied moderately. As it is a species adapted to poor and dry substrates, it does not require heavy fertilization. Excess nitrogen can produce overly soft and open growth, reducing the plant's characteristic density.
