🌱 Morphology
Small, globose cactus that can branch out through lateral shoots and quickly form compact clusters. The stems reach about 6 cm in height and 5 cm in diameter. It has conical tubercles up to 1 cm long, with naked axils or ones provided with a few bristles. The areoles develop 15–18(24) white, fine, and bristle-like radial spines, and about 4 reddish central spines, one of which is generally hooked. The flowers, large in relation to the plant, reach 1.8–2.2 cm and are purplish-pink to carmine in color.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to Mexico, mainly in Guanajuato and Querétaro. It inhabits very restricted areas of oak forest and dry scrubland, generally between 1,700 and 2,300 m, growing in rocky environments with shade and seasonal humidity. It is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) due to its extremely limited distribution area.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC, provided it is kept dry and for short periods.
☀️ Lighting
It develops well with plenty of light and can be grown in full sun. To obtain compact growth and abundant flowering, high light availability is recommended, around 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, adapting the exposure to cultivation conditions.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering should be gradually spaced out, and it should be kept dry during winter. Cold, dry dormancy promotes flower induction.
🌸 Flowering
One of the most floriferous and precocious Mammillaria. In its habitat, it blooms mainly in March and April, producing a crown of purplish-pink or carmine flowers around the apex. It is exceptionally early-blooming: it can begin to flower when it barely reaches 1 cm in diameter.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
