🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent with a compact, highly branched habit from the base, forming dense, greyish-green cushions up to about 7 cm tall and 20 cm in diameter. The stems produce pairs of opposite and decussate, fleshy, erect or spreading leaves that are semi-cylindrical, slightly curved, and have an obtuse apex. The leaves measure approximately 20–30 × 5–9 mm and have a granular epidermis with small dark dots, especially on the keel.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to the Western Cape Province, South Africa, where it grows in mountainous areas at altitudes around 950–1200 m. It is part of the Aizoaceae family and inhabits dry, rocky, and well-drained terrain.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate remains dry. Winter humidity combined with low temperatures significantly increases the risk of root rot.
☀️ Lighting
Requires high light levels and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, it is recommended to reach a DLI PAR higher than 20 mol/m²/day. In the hottest months, it may benefit from slight protection from midday sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its main activity is concentrated from spring through summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In summer, especially with high temperatures, it is advisable to significantly reduce water intake. During winter dormancy, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
Produces yellow, daisy-like flowers up to about 3 cm in diameter, which are fragrant and capable of opening at dusk. Flowering occurs in spring in its native hemisphere, approximately between March and May in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
