Euphorbia x japonica | Japanese spurge

🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small tropical pineapple that decided to become a colony of miniatures. Each stem is shaped like a tiny pineapple, covered by a succession of geometric reliefs arranged in a spiral and topped by a small tuft of leaves. When several shoots grow together, the result looks like a small plantation of green pineapples straight out of a sculpture.
It is a dwarf horticultural hybrid, slow-growing, with a thick taproot that transforms into a small, partially subterranean caudex. From it emerge several short, globose stems, about 2–5 cm long and up to 4 cm in diameter, covered by corky tubercles arranged in a spiral. The leaves are deciduous, lanceolate and narrow, about 3–5 cm long, and are grouped at the end of the stems, forming a small crown. During the dormant period, the leaves may fall off almost completely. It does not have prominent thorns.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It has no natural distribution: it is a hybrid of horticultural origin, generally identified as Euphorbia bupleurifolia × Euphorbia susannae. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Euphorbia × japonica is used as a horticultural denomination, while Euphorbia ‘Cocklebur’ is the cultivar name used in specialized sources in Japan.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC only under very dry conditions, with well-acclimated specimens and during brief episodes. For pot cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 8–10 ºC during the winter, especially if there is moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, lighting of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended. It prefers abundant light, although it can be grown in filtered light or bright partial shade. Direct sun should be introduced progressively to avoid burns.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In the warm months, it is not advisable to keep the substrate dry for excessively long periods. During dormancy, it loses its leaves and watering should be greatly reduced, especially avoiding excess winter humidity, which encourages caudex rot.
🌸 Flowering
The flowering of this hybrid is not well documented, and some specialized sources indicate that it has not been observed regularly in cultivation. Its main ornamental interest lies in the extraordinary architecture of its stems, the caudex, and the leaves that form its characteristic crown.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
