Euphorbia trigona | Green cathedral
€21,20
📍 Highly branched Euphorbia with erect stems adorned with small leaves between pairs of spines. Perfect for creating combinations in pots with other species.
🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small piece of vegetal architecture built with a ruler and square. Its green stems rise to form columns with a triangular cross-section, perfectly geometric, and branch from the base as if each new arm had been deliberately placed to build a small plant cathedral. Along the ribs appear small prickly structures and tiny leaves that add even more character to this almost impossible-looking plant.
It is a shrubby or arborescent succulent, erect and highly branched, which can reach several meters in height. The stems are fleshy, triangular in cross-section, and feature three prominent ribs with wavy edges and regularly spaced small tubercles. Pairs of short thorns and small, obovate or lanceolate leaves appear on them, which develop mainly during active growth and may fall off later. The stems contain abundant white, irritating, and toxic latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species of the Euphorbiaceae family, native to tropical Africa, from Gabon to Malawi, including Angola and the Congo regions. It grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical environments, alternating between periods of water availability and drier stages. It is currently also introduced and cultivated in different tropical and subtropical regions.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −1 ºC only in perfectly acclimatized specimens, completely dry and during very brief episodes. For cultivation, it is much wiser to protect it from frost: horticultural references consider it a plant sensitive to cold and frost, especially when there is moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, an illumination of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended. It tolerates anything from high luminosity to several hours of direct sun, always with progressive acclimatization to avoid burning the epidermis.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, water intake should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate almost dry. Drainage must be rapid, as the combination of cold and persistent moisture can cause rot.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is rare in cultivation, especially in young specimens. It produces small cyathia characteristic of the genus, which are not very striking individually. When it bears fruit, it develops trilobed capsules that turn reddish or burgundy when ripe.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month during watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
