🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small silver candelabra covered for a few months in large green leaves. From a common base, thick, succulent branches rise and divide, forming an open, sculptural architecture, while the leaves, clustered at the tips, provide an extraordinary contrast between the silvery-gray of the stems and the luminous green of the foliage.
It is an erect, highly branched succulent shrub that can reach approximately 1.2–2 m in height and occasionally more. The branches are cylindrical, thick, and silvery-gray, with very marked rounded tubercles and hardened shields on which spines may appear. Some forms are practically smooth, while in others the spines are more developed, especially in young plants. The leaves are large, fleshy, pale green, and deciduous, and they concentrate mainly at the ends of the branches during the growing season. It produces abundant, irritating white latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species of the Euphorbiaceae family native to western tropical Africa, from the tropical western zone to Gabon. It grows in seasonally dry savannas, on rocky hills and stony ground, and is also cultivated locally.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC only in completely dry, well-acclimated specimens and during brief episodes. It is a cold-sensitive species, and cultivation guidelines recommend protecting it especially from frost and keeping it dry during low temperatures.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, a DLI PAR of 18–25 mol/m²/day is recommended, with plenty of light and direct sun introduced progressively after acclimation. Intense lighting promotes compact growth and good stem coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. With the arrival of the cold period, it loses part or all of its leaves, and watering must be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
The cyathia are small and pale green, with inconspicuous reproductive structures. They can appear on the stems when the plant has lost a good portion of its leaves, making the small inflorescences stand out against the bare architecture of the plant.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific to succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month when watering.
