🌱 Morphology
The most sought after... A perennial, acaulescent, rhizomatous succulent plant that forms compact rosettes. The leaves are very thick, rigid, and fleshy, lanceolate in shape, and feature a characteristic irregularly banded surface. They display grayish-green, dark green, cream, coppery, and pinkish tones, especially on young leaves. The margins are very wavy, reddish or brownish-red, and the apex ends in a hardened point. The leaves can arch outward, giving the plant a sculptural appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is native to tropical Africa, from Gabon to Tanzania and southern tropical Africa, where it grows as a rhizomatous geophyte in seasonally dry tropical environments. Forms formerly called Sansevieria kirkii var. pulchra are currently included by Kew in Dracaena pethera.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC in dry conditions, although it is recommended to avoid frost and, above all, the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It adapts to intense lighting and also to partial shade. To encourage compact growth and maintain the silver, copper, and pink tones, approximately 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During the warm period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In winter, water supply is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It can produce an elevated inflorescence with tubular flowers in greenish, pinkish, or whitish tones, which are generally scented. Flowering is occasional in cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. It is not recommended to fertilize during winter dormancy.
