🌱 Morphology
A highly variable perennial succulent, ranging from erect to decumbent in habit and generally sparsely branched. Stems can measure from just a few centimeters in the most compact forms up to 20–25 cm in vigorous specimens.
The leaves are fleshy, triangular-ovate, approximately 3–12 × 4–8 mm, flat, and ascending. They are arranged very densely in four rows, completely clasping the stem and overlapping like roof tiles. This arrangement gives each stem a very regular quadrangular or oblong structure that tapers toward the apex. The leaves are green to brownish-green and can take on brown tones under intense lighting.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to South Africa, distributed primarily across the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, from the West and Little Karoo to the Great Karoo. It grows in arid and semi-arid environments, especially on rocky pavements and quartz patches, within the Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo, and Fynbos biomes.
It belongs to the Crassulaceae family, section Columnares, a group characterized by species with densely imbricate leaves around the stem and compact, column-like structures.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It is a species from the inland and mountainous regions of South Africa, where it can experience low temperatures during winter. It is recommended to keep it protected from intense frost and, especially, to avoid the combination of prolonged cold and moist substrate. When temperatures are low, the substrate should be kept completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires high light levels to maintain its compact growth and the characteristic geometry of its stems. Indicative DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
With intense lighting, the compact forms may take on brownish-green tones. Insufficient lighting promotes the elongation of internodes and causes the loss of the characteristic quadrangular structure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Crassula pyramidalis comes from regions with predominantly winter rainfall, so its growth is concentrated mainly during periods of moderate temperatures. Cultivation observations note autumn and spring as the periods of greatest activity, while growth stops during the hot summer.
During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly, subsequently allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is terminal, compact, and rounded, forming a characteristic flower head partially hidden at its base by the upper leaves.
The flowers have a calyx of up to about 5 mm and a tubular, somewhat swollen corolla of up to approximately 14 mm, which is white to cream in color. The petals are partially fused at the base and end in a small blunt apex; the anthers are yellow. The leaves or bracts near the inflorescence may develop ciliated margins, giving the impression that certain forms have different leaves just before flowering.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously moistened. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
