🌱 Morphology
Small geophytic cactus, solitary and extremely slow-growing, whose aerial part remains almost level with the ground. The body reaches approximately 6 cm in diameter and barely 1.5 cm in height above the substrate. The tubercles are triangular, rigid, and acute, dark olive green to grayish green in color, with a finely warty and rough surface characteristic of this taxon. Each tubercle features a central woolly groove and two straight, narrow, wool-less lateral grooves. It lacks spines. A powerful napiform root remains buried and functions as a storage organ.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northern San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in small areas south of Matehuala, where it grows on flat or gently sloping terrain, among gravel and limestone outcrops, in xerophilous scrubland, at approximately 1,400 to 2,000 m altitude. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Cacteae tribe. Joël Lodé maintains it within Ariocarpus bravoanus as subspecies hintonii; Ariocarpus fissuratus var. hintonii is the historical basionym.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Cold must always coincide with a completely dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during winter. During spring and summer, deep, widely spaced waterings are recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. Its large storage root makes it especially important to avoid excess moisture.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large flowers relative to its tiny body, approximately 3.5–4 cm, intense magenta pink in color, which emerge from the woolly area of the growth center.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
