🌱 Morphology
A compact hybrid associated with Kelly Griffin’s hybridization program, developed in California and marketed by Altman Plants. It forms dense rosettes of fleshy, triangular, and elongated leaves, extraordinarily ornamented by a high density of tubercles that cover the leaf surface. The blue-green leaves can acquire intense bronze, copper, or reddish tones when receiving high light levels. The margins have small, regular teeth. ‘Wildfire’ bears a great resemblance to ‘Blue Castilloniae Hybrid,’ but is distinguished especially by its higher density of tubercles and the ease with which it develops bronze coloration.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural hybrid and lacks its own natural distribution. Its full genealogy has not been reliably published; it is associated with the Aloe castilloniae complex hybridization line of Kelly Griffin, but specific progenitors should not be attributed without documentation. It belongs to Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to 0 ºC in dry, protected conditions. In pot cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 5 ºC, especially avoiding the combination of cold and moist substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It needs high brightness to maintain a compact structure and develop the characteristic bronze coloration. During growth, 20–30 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR lighting is recommended, with progressive adaptation to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth primarily in autumn-winter. As happens with many compact Aloe hybrids, it develops its greatest activity with moderate temperatures. It is recommended to water abundantly when the substrate is completely dry during the active period, reducing irrigation during very high temperatures in summer. Excessive humidity is especially harmful when it coincides with cold.
🌸 Flowering
Hybrids in this line can produce inflorescences with tubular flowers in reddish, orange, or coral tones, although flowering can vary between clones and cultivation conditions. No reliable data has been found regarding the specific age of first flowering for ‘Wildfire’.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with high content of potassium and bioassimilable calcium is recommended. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
