🌱 Morphology
Coral Aloe (Aloe striata Haw.), known internationally as Coral Aloe. It forms a generally solitary rosette, stemless or on a short stem, up to about 50 cm in diameter. Its leaves are wide, thick, and lance-shaped, blue-green or grey-green, with fine longitudinal striations that can become more visible with water stress. The margin is smooth, white, pink, or reddish, and is one of the species' most distinctive features: it completely lacks spines or teeth. In dry conditions, the leaves can acquire a spectacular coppery or reddish hue.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to South Africa, with a discontinuous distribution across Western Cape and Eastern Cape. It grows mainly on rocky slopes and dry scrublands of the Succulent Karoo, Nama-Karoo, and Albany Thicket biomes, enduring prolonged periods of drought. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. It is relatively hardy among aloes, but in pots, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially if there is humidity. It can temporarily withstand temperatures close to -4°C when completely dry and protected, but the combination of intense cold and wet substrate should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. It needs a lot of light to maintain a compact rosette and develop the striations and pink or coppery tones of the leaves. It tolerates full sun after progressive acclimatization, although in Madrid it may benefit from protection from the most extreme sun when very high temperatures coincide with strong radiation.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, without a rigid annual dormancy period. Its adaptation to environments with irregular rainfall allows it to take advantage of different episodes of humidity and favorable temperature. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During cold winters or extreme heat waves, considerably space out waterings.
🌸 Flowering
It produces erect floral stalks up to approximately 1 m, usually branched, with several relatively short and loose racemes. The flowers are tubular and can show coral red, orange, pink, or reddish tones, depending on the population. In Madrid, it flowers mainly during winter between January–April, although this can vary depending on cultivation conditions.
