🌱 Morphology
A robust, very short-stemmed aloe, forming a large solitary rosette, although it can occasionally produce clusters of up to three rosettes. The green, fleshy leaves form a very dense rosette and have reddish-brown teeth on the margins. The plant can reach about 1.5 m in height when in flower. Its most spectacular feature is the inflorescence: a simple, erect, very dense raceme of up to 1–1.5 m, whose large bracts are imbricated like snake scales and almost completely hide the flowers.
🌍 Distribution, Habitat, and Family
A species of the Asphodelaceae family, native to South Africa and Lesotho. It is distributed across the Cape provinces, Free State, and southwestern Lesotho, growing on rocky slopes and ridges inland, between 1,000 and 2,000 m altitude. It inhabits Nama Karoo areas and grasslands, with mainly summer rainfall of about 300–500 mm annually.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11. It is one of the relatively cold-hardy Aloes and can withstand light frosts once established. For potted plants in Madrid, we recommend keeping it above 4–5 °C, and it can temporarily tolerate temperatures close to -4°C if the substrate is completely dry and protected from persistent humidity.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. It is a full-sun species. Intense light keeps the rosette compact and promotes vigorous flowering. In Madrid, it should be progressively acclimatized to direct sun, especially after winter.
💧 Growth Cycle
Mainly summer growth, with winter dormancy. In its habitat, rainfall is concentrated in summer, while winter is drier and colder. During the active season: water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. From late autumn and during winter, reduce watering significantly, keeping the substrate practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
The spectacular inflorescence appears in the northern hemisphere approximately between March and May. The flowers are small, tubular, and pale greenish-yellow, but remain almost hidden by the large bracts; only the stamens and stigma protrude.
🌿 Nutrition
Fertilize during the active growth period with Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., especially suitable for Aloe and other succulents, with particular importance of calcium and potassium. Reduce or suspend fertilization during winter dormancy.
